In 1839 John McArthur, in partnership with Charles Morgan Junior bought the Edge Tools Mills, Chew Magna and Ironmongery business which was to become the foundation of the Company. The Company was then known as "Morgan, McArthur & Company - Iron, Copper and Tinplate Merchants, Wholesale Ironmongers and makers of edge tools."
John McArthurWhen John McArthur died in 1864 a new partnership was formed that would include
one of his sons and was known as Butterworth, McArthur Bridges and Company.
Donald McArthur
In 1876 the Company became known as Butterworth, McArthur, Nash & Company, when Mr Bridges retired and was replaced by Mr Nash. Some 14 years later another name change occurred when Mr Butterworth retired, reducing the name of the company to McArthur, Nash and Company. This name continued for 23 years until 1913 when Mr Nash retired and the company became a purely McArthur affair for the first time. The Company now traded as McArthur and Company, with Donald and Allan McArthur as partners. This name was retained for 3 decades until 1945.
Allan McArthur
In 1945 the Company was given a new and more informative title McArthur (Steel & Metal) Ltd, and became a Limited Company for the first time.
In 1983 the Company was renamed McArthur Group Limited, a title that more accurately reflected the diverse group of companies that, through acquisition, now made up the group.
Although there have been many changes of name during the Companies 165 year history one thing has remained consistent. The name has always included a McArthur but, more importantly, a McArthur has always been active in the management of the business.
Now, over 170 years after its foundation, 4th generation McArthurs are still actively participating in the day-to-day running of the business.
