The foundations for any well hung gate is to start with a substantial,
solidly planted strainer post. It's the post that supports the
fence and therefore takes all the strain, so, for good results,
it must be the strongest post in the fence. The strainer post
must be big enough for the gate's size and weight and should be
dug or driven halfway into the ground.
SCREW
GUDGEONS
For smaller farm and domestic gates and economy type gates.
To secure in the post, use the correct auger or drill bits
as follows:
20mm gudgeon - 16mm auger/drill bit
16mm gudgeon - 12-13mm auger/drill bit
12mm gudgeon - 8-9 auger/drill bit
In most cases even large deer gates may only require a
screw gudgeon. This is because the larger height and square
proportions of deer gates spread the weight more evenly,
creating less leverage and consequent strain on the strainer
post.
THROUGH POST GUDGEONS
For sheep gates, cattle gates and deer gates 3-4.27m (10-14ft).
To secure in the post, use an auger bit (an ordinary drill
bit is not long enough) the same size as the gudgeon, e.g.
a 20mm auger drill bit for a 20mm gudgeon.
